Today, the Reestoeverschool in Meppel is all about National Pancake Day. The pupils of the primary school for special education have baked pancakes for the elderly in collaboration with home care organization De Nieuwe Zorg Thuis. With this, the organization wants to let it be known that clients living at home are not forgotten.
“What you often see is that it is brought to care homes,” says initiator Mark van der Veen of De Nieuwe Zorg Thuis. “There is also a bit of loneliness in those people and that is why we have said that we are going to bake pancakes and bring it to people’s homes.”
‘They learn something from this’
In collaboration with about sixty students from three groups, a lot of clients were surprised. According to the initiator, not only the elderly are put in the spotlight with this action. “The children here are real doers and that’s why they bake with us for an hour. They learn something from this. Of course they can also eat a pancake themselves.”
Student Liam and his classmates are busy in the cooking room. “I’m baking pancakes for the elderly and I really enjoy it.” While he’s not going to help deliver the pancakes, he’s definitely going to eat one.
To deliver
From 12 noon, Van der Veen, together with students from the Reestoeverschool, set out to deliver. In total there are 27 addresses on the list. Van der Veen: “We would prefer to provide all our clients with a pancake, but that is not going to work.”
