National goalkeeper | Schult wants to make the national coach’s decision difficult

National soccer goalkeeper Almuth Schult still sees a chance of starting as number one at the upcoming European Women’s Championship in England.

“I want to make the decision as difficult as possible for the national coach,” said the 31-year-old from VfL Wolfsburg at a media round. “I don’t see that the decision is already set in stone.”

Frohms or Schult?

National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg has to decide between the experienced goalkeeper, Merle Frohms, who inherits Schult at VfL Wolfsburg, and Ann-Katrin Berger (Chelsea LFC). Most recently, Schult’s comeback after a long DFB abstinence in April burst due to another shoulder injury. Frohms has good cards to start as number one. “Everything has been amicable so far, and I assume that it will stay that way. Merle and I have known each other for a long time,” said Schult, who supported Frohms in studying for the Abitur at the time. “We’ve always developed side by side, but also together, and that’s why we appreciate each other.”

Despite moving to Los Angeles-based Angel City FC in the United States, Schult wants to continue playing for the national team. Unless “the traveling would become too much for me and I would reconsider it. But so far my career is going on just like before.”

Their last game for Wolfsburg will take place before the European Championship and their departure to the United States: on Saturday (4.45 p.m./ARD) VfL will play Turbine Potsdam in the final of the DFB Cup. Schult could win the cup with the Green-Whites for the eighth time in a row.
