Hansi Flick is under a lot of pressure after the disappointing results in June. On Thursday, the national coach announced the DFB squad with which to celebrate success again against Japan (September 9th) and France (September 12th). He leaves two stars from FC Bayern at home, for which he nominates an island legionnaire.
Without Leon Goretzka and Thomas Müller from FC Bayern and the defensive players Thilo Kehrer from West Ham United and Matthias Ginter from SC Freiburg or the Leipzigers Timo Werner and David Raum, national coach Hansi Flick will tackle the next two tasks on the way to the European Championship at home. The DFB announced this on Thursday morning.
“Everyone now has to put their ego behind, put themselves at the service of the team,” said Flick in a media slot on Thursday about his tough decisions. “Who energizes the team? We’re looking at that very closely. The team is the star, not the individual.”
On the defensive, Flick instead relies on Niklas Süle from Borussia Dortmund, whom he left out in June. In midfield, the national coach is sending a completely new man to the selection in Pascal Groß.
Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry from Bayern Munich
The 32-year-old has been pulling the strings in midfield at Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion for years. Groß has not been nominated for a DFB selection since his four appearances for the German U20 national team, which are now more than twelve years ago.
In the meantime, national coach Hansi Flick has the recently injured Jamal Musiala from FC Bayern available on the offensive. In addition to Niklas Süle, Oliver Baumann (TSG Hoffenheim), Felix Nmecha (BVB), Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen), Kevin Schade (FC Brentford) and Serge Gnabry (FC Bayern) have also returned compared to the games in June.
From Monday the German national team will gather at the team quarters in Wolfsburg. The game against Japan (September 9, 8:45 p.m. live on RTL) will take place there. Three days later the duel against France takes place in Dortmund (9:00 p.m., ARD).
