Tesla can currently announce one milestone after another. After the group celebrated the production of a total of four million electric cars in March and at the beginning of September the two millionth vehicle rolled off the production line at the gigafactory in Shanghai since production started there, the car manufacturer has now announced that a total of five million vehicles have now been produced. There is still a long way to go until the long-term production goal is achieved.
• Tesla will have produced a total of five million electric cars by mid-September 2023
• Five millionth vehicle, probably the Model 3 Highland from the factory in Shanghai
• Ambitious long-term goal: 20 million cars per year by 2030 at the latest
The electric car manufacturer Tesla is keeping its production pace high. Only around half a year after the group Elon Musk celebrated its four millionth vehicle in March, another million electric cars have now been produced. The company announced this over the weekend on the short message platform X, formerly Twitter. “This week we produced our five millionth car – we thank you Tesla owners for your continued support!” wrote the company’s official account. Tesla boss Elon Musk also acknowledged the milestone. “Congratulations Tesla team! That’s a lot of cars,” he replied to the post.

Unlike before, however, Tesla did not specify which model reached the milestone or at which location the vehicle was manufactured. As several media outlets report, citing the Chinese microblogging service Weibo, it is said to have been a Model 3 Highland in the color “Pearl White” that was produced in the gigafactory in Shanghai. This recently celebrated a success with the two millionth Tesla manufactured there. According to “InsideEVs”, the Chinese factory is also the US company’s largest production facility.
Tesla has been able to increase production speed significantly over the years – ambitious goals ahead
In recent years, Tesla has opened several new production facilities and further expanded existing ones. The company now produces its electric cars in the USA in the Gigafactories in Fremont and Austin and has another factory in Shanghai, China, and the German town of Grünheide near Berlin. It is therefore no wonder that the company has been able to significantly increase its production speed over time.
While it took around twelve years after the first Roadster was produced in 2008 until a total of one million Teslas were produced in spring 2020, according to “InsideEVs”, it only took around 18 months until the second million were produced in September 2021. In mid-August 2022 Tesla then produced a total of three million cars, and another million Teslas rolled off the assembly line in the seven months up to March 2023. It took around six months for the five millionth Tesla to arrive. The pace of production has recently increased only minimally. However, according to “Teslamag”, Tesla CEO Elon Musk had already announced in July that production could even fall slightly in the current quarter due to breaks in the factories due to renovations.
According to “electrek”, Tesla currently states its annual production capacity as up to 650,000 vehicles of all model series in Fremont, at least 250,000 Model Y in Austin, at least 750,000 Model 3 and Model Y in Shanghai and 375,000 Model Y in Grünheide. In summary, that’s at least 2.025 million electric cars per year – or around a million Teslas every six months. However, Tesla is still a long way from its long-term production goal – despite all the mileage it has already achieved. By 2030 at the latest, 20 million cars will roll off the assembly line worldwide every year under the leadership of the ambitious billionaire Elon Musk. But more factories are needed for this. In March, for example, Tesla announced a new Gigafactory in Mexico, which will be the largest of its kind. Now, however, its construction appears to be delayed. It remains to be seen whether this will finally overturn the already ambitious long-term goals.
