The electric car manufacturer Tesla now has numerous competitors – including US rival Rivian. CEO Robert “RJ” Scaringe recently found words of praise for the Musk Group. However, the Rivian boss still can’t imagine driving a Cybertruck.

Rivian is shaking up electromobility
Even though Tesla is still considered a pioneer in the field of electromobility, the company has… Elon Musk led US group now has numerous competitors from all parts of the world. This also includes the US competitor Rivian, based in Plymouth, Michigan. So far, the Tesla rival has a pickup truck and an SUV on the market with the R1T and the R1S, and the company has also developed the EDV (Electric Delivery Van) for Amazon. However, this means that the product range of the group under the leadership of CEO Robert “RJ” Scaringe differs from that of Tesla. The Musk Group currently mainly offers sedans and smaller SUVs, while Rivian specializes in vehicles with better off-road mobility.
Rivian boss comes out as a Tesla fan
In an interview with the US “GQ”, Scaringe was unexpectedly full of praise for the competitor from Austin, Texas – and this may explain the different product offerings. “I have owned several Teslas,” said the Rivian boss. And further: “I believe the world is better because Tesla exists.” Nevertheless, the market for electric vehicles is far from saturated; the share of electric cars in new car sales is currently only around ten percent. “So there’s still a lot of growth. And it’s still very unclear who the big owners of the market will be when you get to 100 percent.”
Scaringe has no interest in Cybertruck
However, with the imminent release of Tesla’s Cybertruck, the two electric car manufacturers would have two similar models on the market; after all, just like the R1T, it is an electric pickup. Unlike previous models, Scaringe doesn’t seem to want to use Tesla’s new addition for personal use, as he admitted to GQ’s Alex Kantrowitz. “I personally would [den Cybertruck] do not buy. But I think it’s cool that it exists,” said the entrepreneur. “It’s a question of personal decision, personal taste. It’s not for me, but I know it will be for someone.”
R2 vehicles should approach Tesla in terms of price
However, the Rivian CEO feels well positioned with his current range of offerings. “We have great confidence in our technology platforms and in the brand we are building,” he said confidently. “We are one of the largest players in the premium segment. What we consider our flagship vehicles – the R1T, cars over $70,000 – we are the dominant player there.” However, the upcoming R2 platform could prove to be a challenge, as Scaringe admitted. The price of the next Rivian generation, in a range of 40,000 to 60,000 US dollars, is significantly lower than the current one, which brings it closer to Tesla’s price level. “This product is so important to us because for the first time we will be creating something for a much broader segment of the population. And the relevance of the brand increases significantly when a large part of the population can actually be a customer,” said the CEO. According to Scaringe, the new vehicle is “close to being launched on the market”.
