NASDAQ value of Amazon shares: Amazon is turning the price screw on Amazon Music

Another price increase: Prime customers now have to dig deeper into their pockets to use Amazon Music Unlimited.

• Another price increase for Amazon Music Unlimited
• The new price is now EUR 9.99 per month
• Amazon and Spotify dominate the streaming market

Price increase of one euro for Prime customers

After Amazon had already increased the prices for non-prime customers for its streaming service Amazon Music Unlimited at the beginning of the year, Amazon is now also increasing the prices for Prime customers. The price for Prime customers is now EUR 9.99 per month, for customers without Prime membership the monthly price is EUR 10.99. The family membership costs $16.99 a month or $169 a year, while the special Echo version, which lets you play music through Echo devices like Alexa, costs $4.99 a month. According to the company, customers can stream more than 100 million songs from Spotify competitor Amazon Music Unlimited. The service is in no way inferior to its competitor Spotify, on which users can also access over 100 million songs, according to the company.

Pop is the most popular genre

Music streaming is becoming more and more popular – according to an evaluation by GfK Entertainment and the Federal Association of the Music Industry (BVMI), around 178 billion audio streams were measured in 2022 alone, which corresponds to an increase of eight percent compared to the previous year. Compared to 2019, that was an increase of almost two thirds. According to data from Gfk Entertainment and the BVMI, the total number of audio streams since 2013 has totaled over 800 billion streams. The most popular music genre was pop with around 28 percent, followed by hip hop/rap with 23 percent.

Spotify and Amazon dominate the market

According to Statista Market Insights, the majority of the streams are on Spotify and Amazon Prime Music, which together have a market share of around 58 percent. In 2022, top dog Spotify managed to surpass 200 million users, but the company was still not profitable and recorded a loss of 430 million euros on sales of 11 billion euros over the course of the year. By comparison, Amazon was able to generate about $35 billion in revenue from its subscription services last year. However, it is unclear to what extent Amazon Music Unlimited contributed to the turnover, since the company does not publish exact figures for the individual sub-segments of a Prime membership.
