A future in which humans and humanoid robots live side by side is moving ever closer to the realm of possibility. Tesla has now introduced the next generation of its humanoid robot, the Optimus Gen 2.
• Improved actuators and sensors
• 30 percent faster running speed
• Price under $20,000
Many innovations
In the video published by Tesla on X, a number of innovations of the new model are shown. The new Optimus model features, among other things, newly developed actuators and sensors as well as a neck that is controlled with two degrees of freedom and therefore has significantly greater flexibility and human-like head movements. The robot is now significantly faster. Compared to its predecessor, the new Optimus model has a running speed that is 30 percent faster. In addition, according to Tesla, the robot’s foot design has been significantly improved. The feet are now equipped with sophisticated sensors for force and torque and have articulated toe parts whose structure is very similar to the geometry of the human foot.

Lower weight and improved hands
In addition to the innovations already mentioned, according to the video, the robot has also lost weight and is now 10 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. This weight reduction is said to contribute to improved whole-body control and balance. Another highlight is the redesign of the robot’s hands, which now have faster, brand new 11-DoF (Degrees of Freedom) hands with tactile scanning on all fingers and should give the new model a significantly improved tactile feel. These skills are demonstrated in the video as the robot deftly transfers an egg from one hand to the other without damaging it. The new Optimus also performs well on the dance floor, with the robot swinging its hips in the last seconds of the video.
Price under $20,000
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has high hopes for the field of robotics. In a first-quarter 2022 earnings call, he expressed the view that the Optimus robot could potentially become more valuable than Tesla’s entire auto business.
In addition, Musk gave a glimpse of the commercial future of the Optimus robot at Tesla AI Day 2022. He estimated that the cost of such a robot would likely be less than $20,000. This would put the robot in an affordable price range for wider market launch. According to Musk, who is known for his very ambitious schedules, it should be available by 2027 at the latest.
