New registrations of Tesla models in Germany fell significantly in September, but the Model Y remains the favorite among electric cars.
• Tesla sells fewer Chinese-made electric cars
• USA: Tesla sells the most electric cars
• New registrations in Germany declining – Model Y still in first place
Sales of Teslas made in China are declining
According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla sold 74,073 Chinese-made electric cars in September. This corresponds to a decrease of 10.9 percent compared to the same month last year. Compared to August 2023, sales figures fell by 12.0 percent. The Chinese competitor BYD was able to increase its sales in September by 42.8 percent to a total of 286,903 vehicles.
In the third quarter, Tesla sold 222,517 cars made in China, an increase of 18 percent year-on-year – but a decrease of 10 percent compared to the second quarter of 2023.
Tesla is pulling ahead of the competition in the USA
In the US, Tesla sold 325,291 electric vehicles in the first half of the year, well ahead of competitors such as General Motors’ Chevrolet brand, Ford, Hyundai, Rivian, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Kia and AUDI. Tesla was also clearly ahead when it came to the various models. The two best-selling electric cars in the USA in the first half of the year were the Model Y and the Model 3. Overall, with these two models and the Model X, three Tesla models were in the top ten.
German electric car market shrank in September
In Germany, the number of new registrations of electric cars in September fell by 28.6 percent to 31,714 compared to the same month last year, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). This meant a share of 14.1 percent of the total new registrations. However, as Teslamag reports, this development is not unexpected, as the German e-car market recorded an atypical peak in August with the end of the environmental bonus for commercial customers, and a decline was already expected in September. According to KBA, 387,289 electric cars were newly registered in Germany in the first nine months.
Weak month for Tesla
According to KBA, Tesla recorded the most significant decline in registrations in Germany in September, down 69.3 percent, among the higher-volume import brands. In addition to the fact that Tesla, as a purely electric car manufacturer, was disproportionately affected by the already expected decline in September, the Model 3 was missing, according to Teslamag, which was presented in a refreshed version at the beginning of September but has not yet been delivered. Meanwhile was Skoda Despite declining registrations, the import brand has the highest share with 5.7 percent. According to KBA, Smart was able to increase its registrations the most significantly among the German brands in September, at +137.4 percent. The German brand with the highest share was VW with 18.7 percent.
Model Y still ranks first among BEVs
When it comes to new registrations in September, brands such as VW (42,044), Mercedes-Benz (21,125), AUDI (17,902) and BMW (17,720) are far ahead of Tesla. As the KBA reports, a total of 4,216 Tesla vehicles were newly registered in Germany in September. Tesla didn’t even make it into the top ten. According to Teslamag, there were just 110 Model S and 130 Model 3 among the newly registered Tesla vehicles. Meanwhile, according to KBA, 3,921 Model Y were newly registered in September. Although that meant a decrease of 60.2 percent compared to September 2022, the Model Y still led the electric car segment in September and had a share of 12.4 percent within the drive type. In the first nine months of this year, 38,6008 Model Ys were registered in Germany.
