The competition between the two technology groups Apple and Samsung has existed for a number of years – and not only in the field of smartphones. A competitive battle is now also emerging in augmented reality (AR). With the Vision Pro glasses, Apple speaks of the first spatial operating system. Is Samsung following suit now?

Samsung’s prototype
According to a report by the Chinese news portal Vrtuoluo.cn, there is a prototype for virtual reality glasses made by Samsung that is intended to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro. As early as December 2022, Samsung announced that it would be launching XR glasses, with XR standing for “Extended Reality”. However, adjustments have now been necessary due to the release of Apple’s Vision Pro, as Samsung expected the parameter properties of the Vision Pro glasses to be lower, according to Vrtuoluo.cn. The time until a possible publication has therefore been postponed. Nevertheless, the headset should appear in 2024.
Same functionality as Apple
However, the handling of the XR headset should hardly differ from the Vision Pro glasses. Here, too, there should be no controller, an interaction of gestures, eye movements and voice should be sufficient.
The XR headset from Samsung is said to be equipped with the Exynos 2200 chip released in 2022, which was also installed in the tech giant’s smartphones. In addition, it is very likely that it will have a Micro-OLED screen. Four tracking cameras installed on the sides are intended for gesture recognition. It is not yet clear whether an operating system specially developed for this headset will be used. However, there have already been reports of an XR ecosystem, according to golem.de. This is to be created in cooperation with QUALCOMM and Google.
The question of competition
According to the Chinese news portal, it can be assumed that the XR market – like the smartphone market – will be invisibly divided into two camps: Apple (iOS) and Samsung (Android). However, Apple seems to dominate the market, making it difficult to catch up. However, Samsung claims an enormous advantage for itself: Due to the expected focus on the mid-range market, the number of possible buyers is significantly higher than for Apple’s Vision Pro glasses. Ultimately, it remains to be seen which of the two tech giants will come out on top.
