1. FC Nürnberg trembled into the round of 16 of the DFB Cup on Tuesday (October 18th, 2022) with a 1-0 win at Waldhof Mannheim.
The scorer of the evening was Mannheim’s Gerrit Gohlke, who threw the ball into his own goal from close range after a failed defensive action (63rd minute).
Before the game, Mannheim’s stadium announcer dedicated the presentation of the line-ups to a well-known figure from the neo-Nazi and hooligan scene. The association distanced itself from this in the Rheinpfalz-Zeitung. “This action was not coordinated with the club. We will talk about it and see how we react to it,” said managing director Markus Kompp. The person named by the stadium announcer died last Sunday and had sat on the city council for the right-wing extremist NPD. The club also announced in the evening that its announcer did not know the background.
Cup fight without class difference
Third division team Mannheim showed no difference in class compared to the Nuremberg “Club” from the second division. The first half was characterized by many duels and a number of fouls, but there were hardly any goals. At the end of the first part of the game, the guests worked out a little more game shares, but without being able to convert this.
At the beginning of the second half of the game, the guests from Franconia increased the pressure. In the development of the own goal, Kwadwo Duah had run right to the baseline and had passed in the middle, where Gohlke made the mistake.
Waldhof coach Christian Neidhart brought more offensive power in the final phase, for example the “eternal” Marc Schnatterer should help to equalize in the last 20 minutes or so. But Nuremberg brought the wafer-thin victory over time.

1. FC Nürnberg has a home game against Hannover 96 in the 2nd Bundesliga on Saturday (October 22nd, 2022). Waldhof Mannheim is also back in action on Saturday, then it’s off to Rot-Weiss Essen in the 3rd division.
