Narrow Gauge Trains | The politics of resignations, by Álex Sàlmon

The responsibility of Isaiah Taboas, outgoing president of Renfe, on the dimensions of the trains that did not fit through the tunnels of the Feve tracks in Asturias is more than doubtful. But politics is like that. A communication that manages to reduce so much that it is ridiculous is a difficult slab to bear. The simplest thing is to cut off the head of someone from above, even if he is not the culprit, and show that what seems to never happen, happens. For home!

The controversies regarding the Feve trains come from afar. It’s what narrow gauge trains have. Or so it seems. Already in 2012, in the Zapatero era, 28 convoys were acquired that had no roads to circulate on. That was denounced by Minister Ana Pastor (PP) and she reached the Council of State on whether they should be paid.

In this case the level of responsibility is more distributed. The controversy affects, in addition to Renfe, who made the contract Adiff, that described the measurements of the gauges (the reference contour for a train to circulate safely), to the State Railway Safety Agency who drafted the regulations published in the BOE, Ministry of Transport that he was slow when looking for solutions and even Principality of Asturias who pretended that it did not go with them.

Faced with so much irresponsibility, it is difficult to establish who should really eat the toad that five administrations had on the table. On the other hand, and not only for this matter, the trust between two people who are well known for their historic time in the PSC, the minister Raquel Sánchez and Isaías Táboas, had been lost. So a situation has been taken advantage of to apparently settle a situation that was beginning to sting in Madrid, but, above all, in Asturias and Cantabria.

The funny thing is that the substitute is Raül Blanco, a person who had to leave the Ministry of Industry through the back door because of a matter of European funds, for which he was not the most responsible either. Gives some anger. But politics has these dances.
