Naomi Osaka has defeated another grand slam champion in the first round of the Indian Wells WTA tournament. Osaka was too strong for American Sloane Stephens in three sets: 3-6 6-1 6-2. For the 24-year-old Japanese, it meant her first win over Stephens, winner of the US Open in 2017.
