TO who loves Nanni Moretti your mouth will water to see the trailer of his new film, The sun of the future. In cinemas from April 20, comes out two years after Three floors, not particularly appreciated by critics. Shot in Cinecittà, it is obviously written and scripted by the director together with Valia Santella, Federica Pontremoli and Francesca Marcianand as the images show it is just about comedy “alla Nanni Moretti”.
The sun of the future: the trailer, plot, Netflix
«Your film is a subversive film», says a character played by Mathieu Amalric in one scene as he goes around Rome in the evening on a scooter with Nanni Moretti. Amalric is a French actor-director with around fifty films behind him including The French Dispatch, Of Wes Anderson And The officer and the spy (J’accuse), Of Roman Polanski.
From what can be seen from the trailer, and from the director’s posts on Instagram, Moretti’s latest film tells of the making of a film set in a circus in the 50s-70s.
Naturally we also talk about politics (in the shots proposed by the director on Instagram you can see circus bands and an old headquarters of the Italian Communist Party), couple relationships, psychotherapyall themes Morettians.
There’s even a stock on Netflix. At a certain point, Mathieu Amalric says he managed to get an appointment with streaming. In the meeting room – together with Nanni – two managers repeat to them that «Our products are seen in 190 countries. In 190 countries. In 190 countries» (a Netflix leitmotif mocked by Moretti in an interview months ago), then adding that «his screenplay is one slowburner that doesn’t explode.” Evergreen and powerful the soundtrack of the trailer: Franco Battiato, Luigi Tenco, Aretha Franklin.
Animal rights activists against
Meanwhile, even before its release, the film has sparked some controversy. Some animal rights groups have risen up against the use of circus animals, lions and elephants at the Imperial Forums. Criticisms that have also arrived on the director’s social networks, insulted and accused of mistreating animals.
The cast: familiar faces and news
Alongside Mathieu Amalric, who is acting for the first time with the director, and Moretti himself, are part of the cast Margherita Buy and Silvio Orlando. Then there are Barbora Bobulova, Jerzy Stuhr, Polish actor and director (he was the pope’s spokesman in Habemus Papam), Elena Lietti, Blu Yoshimi. Blu is now 25 years old and as a child she played Moretti’s daughter in Calm chaos.
