NAM closes nitrogen injection well near Koekange

The location of the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) along the Oshaarseweg near Koekange is being demolished. Nitrogen was injected into the soil at the site, but that has been stopped. The location is therefore unnecessary, a company spokesperson said.

There is still an air separation installation at the site. A tower that can separate nitrogen and oxygen from the outside air. The installation was installed about ten years ago. Extracted nitrogen then went into the ground to push natural gas to a gas extraction facility. This no longer appears to be so effective in this location today, says the NAM. That’s why everything is broken down.

In the near future, local residents will be able to see transport trucks driving around the area taking away the waste. NAM expects the work to be completed by the end of this year. According to the spokesperson, the well is no longer used for gas extraction.

The location will be thoroughly cleaned up again later.

According to the municipality of De Wolden, there are currently no concrete plans for the area. A meeting is planned in October with the neighborhood, municipality, NAM and the owner of the nearby sand extraction location.

An external agency may then be commissioned to find out whether an energy hub can be built at the former gas extraction location. A place where local parties can work together in the field of energy. The possibility of digging a sand extraction pond at the location is also discussed.
