Rafael Nadal will make his comeback on the track at the Masters tournament in Cincinnati next week. The Spaniard seems to have recovered from an abdominal injury that has plagued him since Wimbledon.
36-year-old Nadal posted a message on Wednesday evening Instagram in which he announces that he will fly to the United States on Thursday. “I’m very happy to be able to play in Cincinnati again,” the tennis legend writes with a photo of himself in Mallorca.
Initially, Nadal would start his preparation for the US Open this week in Montreal, Canada. The 22-time Grand Slam winner withdrew from the Masters tournament, because he still suffered too much from his abdominal muscle injury.
Because of that injury, Nadal withdrew last month for his semi-final match against Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon. In the fourth round of the Grand Slam tournament in London, the Spaniard was still too strong for Botic van de Zandschulp.
At the US Open (August 29-September 11), Nadal hopes to capture his 23rd Grand Slam title. The number three in the world won the Grand Slam tournament in New York four times and in 2019 for the last time.
Nadal won the Masters tournament in Cincinnati ‘only’ once. ‘Rafa’ was too strong for the American John Isner in the 2013 final. The prestigious hard court tournament starts on Saturday and lasts until Sunday 21 August.
