Rafael Nadal has been knocked out in the fourth round of the US Open by American Frances Tiafoe. It became 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3 for the 24-year-old number 26 in the world.
For Nadal, a four-time winner in New York, it was his first loss of the season at the grand slam level. He won the Australian Open and Roland Garros this year and gave up in the Wimbledon semifinals with an abdominal muscle injury.
The 36-year-old Nadal could have won his 23rd Grand Slam title in New York. Novak Djokovic has 21 to his name, Roger Federer one less.
