Like a bolt from the blue. Many NAC supporters did not see the dismissal of trainer Peter Hyballa coming. The message that NAC placed on its website led to a storm of reactions. Is it April 1 yet? Serious? Will we also hear the real reason for the dismissal? And with a nod to Pierre van Hooijdonk: “These are dark matters.”
According to technical director Peter Maas, despite all the quality improvements, too little progress has been made. Supporters on social media react with disbelief and bewilderment.
“What a nonsense reason,” grumbles Ferry de Bont, the loyal NAC Twitter user on Joep de Wildt wonders whether: “NAC has fired the right person. “Unbelievable,” writes Adios den Brass. “Who will come now?”
Trainer’s graveyard
“Nothing, no culture change. It remains a trainer’s graveyard,” Eric Hendriks expresses his heart. “It’s a shitty club, but it’s my shitty club.” Hans Paardekam sighs that with Hyballa yet another NAC trainer is being buried in the cemetery. “Why is it always restless at our club,” he wonders. And he’s right. Since 2015, the Breda club has employed twelve trainers, of which only two were employed by NAC for more than a year (Marinus Dijkhuizen and Stijn Vreven).

Christian DG already saw the mood at the end of the season. “Hyballa’s contract had already been extended in April. Everything showed that he was having a hard time in the play-offs, especially when the pressure came on. In retrospect, it would have been better to wait with the contract extension until after the play-offs.”
Panic football
Theo Peeters finds Hyballa’s dismissal surprising and tends towards panic football. “Just out of nowhere. Costs money again. What happened? The only thing I can imagine is that training work was perceived as too heavy. The number of injuries at NAC is extremely high.”
Julian Esser thinks it was a bad plan that Hyballa was fired. “The club benefits from rest (finally) and Hyballa has shown attractive football with high intensity. Very fun to watch and fitting for NAC.” For sports reporter Yannick Wezenbeek there is never a dull moment in Breda. “Rightly or wrongly: as a club, NAC is being taken less seriously every year. Once again, damage to its image… that, in my opinion, is the worst part of this story for the time being.”
One man’s death is another man’s bread. The names of trainer Peter Hyballa’s potential successors are already circulating on social media. “Henk de Jong, proven champion maker,” suggests Chris WM. While scrolling, the names of Stijn Vreven, Dirk Kuyt and Rob Penders also appear.
Supporters are also going wild under the message about Hyballa’s departure on the NAC Instagram page.
