“I think it is the sunset of the year. The most important of the entire season. This is how it was thought even before the pandemic, and it is a long-awaited title, ”acknowledges Vieu, who collaborated for more than a decade with Buenos Aires Lirica at the Avenida Theater, where he presented several times works by Giuseppe Verdi.
“Verdi is the composer I have directed the most, and this is the work that made him a star. an opera in which the choir is the protagonist”, the director refers to the classic “I think”, the choir of the Hebrew slaves remembering Jerusalem, in which they sing “Oh my country, si bella e perduta!” (Or my homeland, although beautiful is lost).
“It has very strong concepts”, continues Vieu about the work premiered at the Scala in Milan in 1842, 180 years ago. Nabucco is the third opera composed by Verdi, the story of the exile of the Hebrew people and his captivity in Babylon.
“There is an important political message. She spoke to him at the time oppressed italy by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and it even worked as an alternative to Mamelli’s anthem”, continues the director. “It takes the story of the Hebrew slaves and a symbiosis is produced in which the Italian people made it their own. He speaks of the longing for the homeland, for the native soil. A work that is recontextualized forever. At this moment it takes on meaning with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it has a very important subliminal message”, analyzes Vieu.
“Va pensiero” certainly became an Italian anthem, and since then has exceeded its time limits and geographical, intoned in various contexts of war and political conflict, such as those that Argentina usually goes through.
Faced with this challenge, Vieu focused on achieving a perfect interpretation. “One can enrich certain elements of the soloists, but there is not much to think about when one makes a classic like this. The key is in the rehearsals, in a lot of work and in achieving a synthesis of that. It is a work that has a perfect script and you have to study it like the first time”, he concludes.
