Mystery solved! This is what this gray house on Osylaan is for

For a few weeks now, there is suddenly a gray house on the edge of the parking lot on Osylaan. Who posted it and why? The editors of indebuurt are looking for it!

According to the municipality of Zoetermeer, this is a Point of Presence, or a PoP. Also called a switch box of a telecom provider. Okay, then we know a lot more. But what exactly is it? We will contact T-Mobile Netherlands for more information.

Fiber optic network

A fiber optic network is being constructed in several places in Zoetermeer. The house on the Osylaan has something to do with that. A spokesperson for T-Mobile Netherlands explains: “A fiber optic network consists of cables and rooms where these cables are collected. The fiber optic box in the meter cupboard is connected to a fiber optic cable that runs to a local exchange along with thousands of other cables. We call this local exchange a Point of Presence (PoP). Here, all fiber optic cables are neatly finished on a so-called patch panel.”

More than ten PoPs in Zoetermeer

The telecom provider puts its equipment in the PoP and, if it wants to connect a customer, can connect (patch) its equipment to the fiber optic cable that goes to the customer’s home. “This space is equipped with (emergency) power and cooling. There are more than ten of these PoPs in Zoetermeer, which are also interconnected,” said T-Mobile Netherlands.

The cottage on Osylaan has been given a permanent place on the edge of the parking lot on Osylaan. The municipality has given permission for this by means of a consent decree.
