Myanmar military junta dissolves party of former head of government Aung San Suu Kyi | Abroad

The National League for Democracy (NLD) won parliamentary elections between 2015 and 2020. Because the announced elections would not be democratic, the party has deliberately not registered and is therefore not covered by the new, strict electoral law. As of tomorrow, NLD has been “automatically cancelled” as a political party, along with about forty other parties that did not register for the elections.

Myanmar has been in chaos since the military overthrew the civilian government in February 2021 over allegations of electoral fraud. Thus came an end to a democratic period of ten years. The inhabitants should be allowed to go to the polls again before August this year, but that has already been postponed by the army for “security and logistical reasons”.

Former head of state and Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced in December to 33 years in prison in what many call a mock trial. She was the head of government of Myanmar from April 6, 2016 to February 1, 2021.
