Rose-headed parrot Lori (18) is a real hero! During a major fire in an apartment in Gropiusstadt, she woke up her owner – and thus saved her from the fire.
The fire broke out on Friday night around 3:30 a.m. on the second floor of a Syrian family’s apartment. The fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire in a short time.
But 17 residents had to be brought to safety through the smoke-filled stairwell using so-called fire escape hoods. Among them: the family from the fire apartment. The mother and two of her three children had to go to the hospital.
Resident Karin Radvan (65) was sleeping when the fire broke out. But she had a protection…bird! “My parrot Lori pinched my cheek until I woke up,” says the 65-year-old to BZ. Lori usually does this when she senses that the diabetic has low blood sugar.
But this time it’s different: smell of burning! Radvan checks the apartment, but sees no reason to worry and goes back to sleep. But Lori doesn’t let up, pinches her owner’s cheek again!
This time she opens the apartment door. Thick smoke is already coming towards her. The fire department was finally able to bring the 65-year-old and her parrot to safety.
The fire apartment is no longer habitable, but the neighbors were able to return to their home. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
