“My girlfriend got suspicious and called the police”

That day Joyce had received bad news from the doctor, which made her upset: “I usually don’t take an anonymous call, this time I did.” The man who called said he was an employee of the bank’s fraud help desk. Someone with a Turkish IP address would have tried to transfer money from her account, he called to check if this was correct. “I knew nothing about it and he advised me to block my account. No, he couldn’t and shouldn’t do that for me, but he would help me through the whole process.”

Joyce: “I felt so stupid that I had fallen for it”

WRONG BULL

For this Joyce had to download a program on her computer so that he could watch. “He helped me every step of the way and asked me to accept something several times. A friend who was visiting became suspicious and called the police. He said it was wrong and that I should hang up immediately. As soon as I hung up, my computer started doing all kinds of things. I quickly turned it off, but my money was already gone.” The police came by to see if there were any traces on her computer that could lead to the fraudster. “Of course I immediately called the bank. They were very sympathetic and went right after it, even though it was now eleven o’clock in the evening. I was warned that it could take a while for the money to be returned. Fortunately, in my case, it turned out to be settled within a few days. I also know stories of people who have lost all their money.”

Are you unsure about the caller? Hang up and call the bank immediately to report.

BAG FULL OF MESSAGES

The event had a big impact on Joyce. “I felt so stupid that I had fallen for it. The police said I wasn’t the only one. These criminals are sophisticated, it’s like they brainwash you. I got support from all sides, which was nice. My children came with humor and practical help, the neighbors invited me to eat with them until my money was returned, there was even someone at the door with a bag full of groceries and an envelope with money. In this way, something beautiful also came out of all the bad, which did me good.”

ALARM BELLS

Scammers pretend to be a bank employee who calls because there is supposedly something strange going on with your account. But watch out:

  • A bank never asks you to transfer money.
  • A bank never sends someone over to pick up a card, scanner or anything else.
  • A bank never asks you to install anything so that they can watch you remotely.

Expose scammers. Look for tips on ING.nl/veiligbankieren.
