“Muu Burgerpihvi” does not mislead the consumer

The Supreme Administrative Court has given its decision regarding the names of Poutu’s vegetable products.

The other Burgerpihvi marketing name does not mislead the consumer, KHO said.

Pippuri.fi reported in November 2019 that Pouttu was ordered to stop using the word vegetable meat in its plant-based dishes.

The municipality’s food control authority had ordered the company to change the marketing names of the vegetarian products “Muu Kasvilihapulla” and “Muu Burgerpihvi”. The marketing was also ordered to be changed so that it does not use the misleading word vegetable meat.

The administrative court rejected the company’s appeal. The Supreme Administrative Court overturned the order regarding the “Muu Burgerpihvi” marketing name, but considered that there was a reason for changing the “vegetable meat” marketing name.

The Supreme Court stated that the name burger patty is not reserved in the food legislation for naming meat products. According to the decision, the average consumer probably no longer likes the term burger patty as a product containing only meat. Therefore, KHO did not consider the marketing name “Muu Burgerpihvi” to be misleading to the consumer.
