Twitter’s current CEO Elon Musk’s Twitter ownership has not driven Finns away from the social media service in question.

Social media and data protection expert Harto Pönkä says that based on the statistics, only a small number of Finns have left the service. In addition, Pönkä reminds that Twitter has been growing strongly in Finland this year compared to the previous few years.

– The main reason for that is certainly the war in Ukraine, which has increased the use a lot.

According to Pöngä, something can happen almost every month that always activates the use of Twitter. As an example, he mentions Independence Day and the soccer World Cup.

– Generally, the most new users are always created during events, Pönkä explains.

In the past, Twitter users have been speculated to switch to, for example, Mastodon. Mastodon is a social media service similar to Twitter, which was released in 2016. Through it, it is possible to publish publications with a maximum length of 500 characters, which are called toots.

However, Pönkä says that he foresaw at the time of the speculations that a Twitter mass exodus would hardly be seen.

– My thought was even then that the number of people leaving will probably remain small, because there is no similar service available, says Pönkä.
