The successful American drama film CODA, which will be eligible for an Oscar this Sunday, will receive a musical version. The producers of the film will make it with theater company Deaf West Theater from Los Angeles.
CODA, short for Child Of Deaf Adults, is about 17-year-old Ruby, the only one hearing in an otherwise deaf fishing family. Ruby dreams of a singing career, but that does not match the perception of her parents and brother and limits the time she has for the family business.
Deaf West Theater is a company that creates performances in which sign language and spoken words merge. Artistic director DJ Kurs says in a press release about the new theater show: ,,The film contains a scene in which the deaf members of the Rossi family are confronted with a school performance that they cannot follow, they experience Ruby’s song through the reactions of others in the hall. This is another opportunity to bring the story back to the deaf community and make it accessible to everyone with our version, which is sung live and in sign language.”
CODA is eligible for three Oscars on Sunday, those for best picture, best screenplay (by director Sian Heder) and best supporting actor (Troy Kotsur). Previously, the film won the most important prize at the Sundance film festival and was sold there for a considerable amount to streaming service Apple.
