The big relocation circus in primary education in Klazienaveen will continue for a while. The merger of three public schools last year started a real musical chairs.
Public primary schools De Spil, De Planet and De Viersprong continued this school year under the name OBS Klazienaveen. They did so in a new building on Van Echtenstraat, right next to a location of the Esdal College for secondary education.
Demolish two schools
The former public education facilities have been empty ever since. The municipality of Emmen is now going to demolish De Planet and De Viersprong locations. For the latter location, the municipality is looking at whether housing can be built. The building of De Spil will be retained. There is now a daycare in it. The Catholic Saint Henricus School is in the picture for new construction at that location.
The other Catholic school Pastoor Middelkoop and Christian primary school De Kap are now aiming for new construction on the site where De Planet previously stood. To keep things clear, De Brug, the other primary school in the village, has no plans to move for the time being.
Emmen is allocating over two hundred thousand euros for the demolition of the two former school buildings. This should start in mid-May and be completed by the end of June.
Growth spurt in Emmen
According to alderman René van der Weide (Wakker Emmen), the relocation circus is a result of the municipality’s housing plan for education from 2021 and Emmen’s growth spurt in the 1970s. . Much of it dates back to that time. Many classrooms no longer meet the quality requirements of today.
