Museum De Wemme in Zuidwolde cannot find a replacement for the closed Slagerij Bouwman: ‘Slaughter day is canceled’

Last year, the number of visitors to the Slaughter Day at Museum de Wemme in Zuidwolde exceeded all expectations, but this year the event will not take place. The organization was unable to find a replacement for Slagerij Bouwman, who closed earlier this year.

It has been a long-standing tradition in Museum De Wemme on the second Saturday of November: Slaughter Day. Last year, the event was finally able to take place again after two corona years.

And with success, because the event attracted many visitors beyond expectations. Afterwards, there was already enthusiastic talk about the next edition, but that cannot take place this year.

Rob Veldman

The main focus on Slaughter Day is always the deboning of a pig, where butcher Rob Veldman from the Bouwman butcher shop in Zuidwolde always patiently did his craft in the past. “Rob Veldman took care of the pig on the ladder every year and told the story of the house slaughter, but in July the Bouwman butcher shop stopped,” said Geja Dierdorp on behalf of the museum.

“As a result, we have no longer been able to organize this traditional day this year. We hope to organize this day again in 2024, which always attracted many interested parties.”
