On August 26th, 2022 British rock band Muse will release their new album WILL OF THE PEOPLE. The new LP should be as varied as it is in terms of style and genre. As a further foretaste, the single “Compliance” can already be heard.
These themes are reflected on the new album
Speaking on the release, vocalist Matt Bellamy explains: “WILL OF THE PEOPLE was formed in Los Angeles and London and is influenced by the increasing uncertainties and uncertainties in the world. A pandemic, new wars in Europe, massive protests and riots, attempted uprisings, the tumbling of Western democracy, increasing authoritarianism, wildfires and natural disasters, the general destabilization of the global order – all of these have influenced WILL OF THE PEOPLE. Western empire and nature have long provided our protection and livelihood, now both are seriously threatened. These are unsettling and scary times for all of us. This album is a personal guide through those fears and a preparation for what is to come.”
“Compliance” serves as an example. The song is about “people submitting to authoritarian rules and soothing untruths in order to be accepted in a group. Gangs, governments, demagogues, social media algorithms, and religions seduce in times of fragility by creating arbitrary rules and twisted ideas for us to obey. They sell us soothing fairy tales and tell us that only they can explain reality while curtailing our freedom, autonomy and free thought. Not only are we coerced, we are driven, scared, and crammed into hurling ‘two minutes of hate’ at a select group of outsiders every day, ignoring our own inner voice of reason and compassion. All they need is our docility – our compliance.”
