Murray in the 3rd round of the US Open for the first time in six years

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray is through to the third round of the US Open for the first time since 2016.

The two-time tennis Olympic champion from Scotland beat Emilio Nava from the USA 5: 7, 6: 3, 6: 1, 6: 0 on Wednesday and could now meet former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini from Italy.

Murray won the US Open in 2012 and is making his 16th appearance at the tournament. Since 2017, the charismatic pro, who received a partial hip replacement three years ago, has not progressed past the third round at a major.

“I’m moving better than I’ve been in a long time,” said Murray, in the ATP ranking he has climbed back to 51st place: “Hopefully I can get far.”
