Murder suspect escapes from prison and flees by bicycle | Inland

A detainee escaped from Nivelles prison on Monday. That writes ‘La Dernière Heure’ and has been confirmed by police and trade union sources to press agency Belga. During his flight, the man grabbed a bicycle. He was caught an hour after his escape.

Immediately after the escape, the police gave chase. The detainee grabbed a bicycle and managed to shake off his pursuers. The young man was finally caught about an hour later when he was on the track, near the Quatre-Vents district and the southern ring road of Nivelles (ring R24).

The man was incarcerated for an alleged murder. His interrogation by the detectives was still ongoing early Monday afternoon.

“No one was attacked or injured during the prisoner’s escape. The exact circumstances are being investigated, but no jailer is to blame,” a trade unionist from CGSP told Belga. According to the trade unionist, this is due to a structural personnel shortage. “Instead of 24 staff members, there are often only five or six present. Monday morning there were a dozen.”
