Mural in Gieten to prevent graffiti

The mural in the Albrechttunnel in Gieten is finished. In recent days, young people from Gieten and the surrounding area, together with a graffiti artist, have provided the tunnel with two large paintings.

The walls of the Albrecht tunnel were regularly defaced with offensive and incoherent texts. The residents requested that those texts be removed. The mural must ensure that the walls are not daubed again.

The young people from Gieten first made designs for the mural, with the help of youth workers and two graffiti artists. Two of these were chosen and painted and sprayed on the walls of the tunnel last week.

One side of the tunnel has the theme ‘wall of local recognisability’. The tunnel is used to go from Eext to Gieten or vice versa. That is why there are recognizable things from both villages such as the Hazewindmolen, Hazehounds and Swan Lake. The other side is the ‘wall of connection and diversity’, where diversity has a double meaning.

It is the social connection between people, but also the connection between Gieten and Eext. A well-known figure in the municipality of Aa en Hunze is the late singer Harry Muskee. He is one of four people whose portrait is painted on this wall.
