Municipality of Medemblik next destination for asylum seekers after Avenhorn

The municipality of Medemblik is the next municipality to receive the group of 225 asylum seekers from November. At the beginning of this month it became clear that Koggenland will take over the emergency shelter from Enkhuizen from mid-March. The shelter is again for six months, a location is not yet known.

Although it has only been eleven days since the municipality of Koggenland announced that it would take over, the successor is already ready. In the mayor’s consultation, Medemblik was asked to receive the group of asylum seekers when the emergency shelter in Avenhorn comes to an end on November 1.

This is necessary because the shortage of reception places at the azcs will not decrease in the coming months. The city is still investigating a location. However, a preference has been expressed for a better facility than the previously used pavilions, in which the group is currently accommodated.

Location

It is not about the location on the Balkweiterhoek in Zwaagdijk-West, which is the subject of the province a letter this week sent.

“In Medemblik we believe that we can and must organize this task. As a municipality, we will use the next six months to properly prepare for this, with the main priority being finding the most suitable location. Of course I can imagine that our residents have questions about the shelter and possibly also concerns. The group that we want to take over from Avenhorn on November 1 was previously in Bergen and Enkhuizen. The reception there has been positive and we assume that this will also work out for us,” says acting mayor Dennis Straat.

Take responsibility

Already in a month moved out the group of 225 asylum seekers from Enkhuizen to a meadow on Julianastraat in Avenhorn. Dennis Straat: “Now that Enkhuizen and Koggenland are making their efforts, we also want to take our responsibility. As agreed in the region, we support each other in this joint challenge.”
