Municipalities may pay out energy surcharges

Municipalities can start to pay out the energy surcharge of 1,300 euros in full. The law that makes this possible has been passed by the Senate. Several municipalities in Drenthe have been ready to transfer the money for some time, but were not yet allowed to do so.

The law allows households at or just above the social minimum to receive an extra allowance to pay energy costs.

Emmen was already ready in January to transfer the 1,300 euros energy surcharge. When it turned out that it would take longer for the law to be passed, this could only be an advance of 500 euros. The advance was also transferred in Hoogeveen, Meppel and Assen, among others, because it took longer for everything to be arranged in The Hague.

What the next step will look like may be different per municipality.

There is a separate arrangement for students whose parents are unable to assist. They receive a one-off compensation of 400 euros through the Education Executive Agency (DUO).

This applies to students with a basic grant and a supplementary grant, and to students who study longer and previously received a supplementary grant. DUO will automatically pay out the compensation to the students who are entitled to it from January 2024.
