Municipalities in West Brabant together receive 1,000 asylum seekers

Six municipalities in West Brabant want to create reception places for a total of about 1000 asylum seekers. The municipalities, which together form the Markiezaten district, have announced this in a joint statement. Only the municipality of Steenbergen does not participate in this collaboration.

“The region realizes that it is facing a considerable task. We want to take that social responsibility,” says alderman Joey van Aken of the municipality of Bergen op Zoom.

The government has instructed all provinces in the Netherlands to come up with plans for the reception of asylum seekers. At the request of the King’s Commissioner Ina Adema, six municipalities in West Brabant have done so.

Until May 1, 2025
The distribution is as follows:

  • Bergen op Zoom: 300 reception places.
  • Halderberge: 100 reception places.
  • Moerdijk: 200 reception places.
  • Roosendaal: 300 reception places.
  • Rucphen: 85 reception places.
  • Woensdrecht: already realized 95 reception places last year. This shelter will last until 1 May 2025.

The municipality of Steenbergen, which is also located in the Markiezaten district, is the only one not to make shelter places available.
