National player Jonas Müller was able to take something positive from the narrow defeat of the Eisbären Berlin at EHC Red Bull Munich.

“I think we’re back on track. The way we played in the last third – we can take that with us into the next games,” said the 26-year-old defender after the 3: 4 against the leaders of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) on Wednesday evening at Magentasport.

Müller was optimistic that the Berliners improved more and more as the game progressed and were almost able to catch up from a 1:4 deficit in the final minutes. “In the last third we showed what we can do. If we play like that, we’ll be uncomfortable for every opponent again,” said the defender. He also highlighted the improvements compared to the 4-1 defeat in Munich three weeks ago, when the capital city had largely had no chance. “I think there was already a big step forward,” says Müller.

Coach Serge Aubin also praised the character of his team: “I liked that we didn’t give up,” he said. “After Munich made it 4-1 in the third period, it would have been easy to just pack up. But the boys stuck with it and fought to the end.”

The Canadian also complained about fatal mistakes before the first three goals conceded. “Of course there are still a few things we need to do better,” admitted Aubin. The polar bears get the opportunity to do so on Friday evening: Then the Iserlohn Roosters, bottom of the table, will be guests in the arena at Ostbahnhof (7.30 p.m., live on Magentasport).
