With this gift, funeral specialist DELA and the City of Bruges ensure that the helicopter from its base in the AZ Sint-Jan Brugge can also save lives in West Flanders and the surrounding area in 2024 and can continue to innovate. “The MUG helicopter recently became the only mobile emergency team in Belgium to have blood products on board,” it said.
Last year the 17,000 euros was used for several months of fuel, but according to doctor Nicolas Müller, 800,000 euros are needed annually. “Keeping our helicopter in the air costs us more than 800,000 euros every year. Donations such as these from DELA and the City of Bruges are more than welcome. With the support we can pay for part of our fuel and maintain our medical equipment.”
“Year after year, the MUG helicopter shows its necessity, but the government only provides a limited subsidy for it. Without voluntary contributions from municipal authorities, citizens and companies, the helicopter cannot stay in the air,” says Bruges councilor Jasper Pillen.
