MSV Duisburg brings in Ralf Heskamp as Managing Director Sport

After Grlic’s resignation

MSV Duisburg presented Ralf Heskamp as Managing Director Sport. As the third division team announced on Wednesday, the 56-year-old will take up his new post on April 1, succeeding Ivica Grlic. The longtime sports director resigned in early February after eleven years in office to clear the way for a new start for the troubled “Zebras”.

Heskamp, who last worked as sports director at Hallesches FC until June 2021, also knows the 3rd division from his positions at Holstein Kiel (2014 to 2015) and VfL Osnabrück (2000 to 2014). He also worked as a scout at FC Bayern. “Ralf Heskamp embodies everything that MSV needs in the future for setting the course in sport: detailed knowledge of the market, the appropriate network, great powers of persuasion and the corresponding courage to make difficult decisions. For sustainable development, he gets the necessary backing and the necessary framework conditions from us as those responsible, so that we can set higher goals again in the medium term. The new Managing Director Sport is passionate about this task and absolutely convinced us in the discussions,” said the CEO Ingo Wald.

Duisburg have taken 32 points from 29 games so far and are 15th in the table. For Heskamp, therefore, staying up in the league is the top priority. “Like last year, the current season is not going according to plan. A place in the bottom third of the 3rd division should not be the claim of a club like MSV. Stadium, infrastructure, fan scene, pool of sponsors and office are predestined for higher tasks. But tradition alone does not win games. It is important to assess the situation realistically and to strive for the declared goal step by step. That can only mean a return to the 2nd Bundesliga.”
