Mourning the closure of Drukkerijmuseum Meppel: ‘A lot of knowledge is disappearing’

It is a profession in itself, being a manager in the graphic world. And then the graphic world of the Drukkerijmuseum. “The pond we fish in is getting smaller and smaller. If you’re in the graphic world these days, you’re working in front of a screen.” Screens alone are not much to be found in the Printing Museum. A reconstructed cave with drawings as the first form of communication, but above all a lot of printing machines. “There is less and less knowledge about the use of these presses. People can still learn that here. If we close the doors, even more knowledge will disappear.”

The oldest is from 1780. Made of wood. “A unique copy. Later they were replaced by cast iron copies, the press is next to it.”

The board of the Drukkerijmuseum is already thinking about the future. “But it’s still too early to say anything about that.” A museum is just not one of them. “Perhaps think of a graphic workshop, for enthusiasts or school classes.”
