Mourning ceremony in the center of Utrecht: ‘climate clock’ jumps to 6 years | NOW

Mourning music this afternoon at the Ganzenmarkt in Utrecht, performed by students of the conservatory. By 6 p.m., according to Extinction Rebellion (XR), ‘the climate clock’ will jump to six years. How long will it take for 1.5 degrees of warming to be irrevocable.

At least if we continue to emit greenhouse gases as we do now. There is every reason for a theatrical, musical mourning ceremony in the center of Utrecht, according to the activists for a better climate.

The International Climate Clock, a project by artists and scientists, shows how much CO₂ humanity can still emit until we exceed the 1.5-degree limit. With a mourning ceremony XR wants to make the grief about this visible and tangible.

Time left to avoid climate catastrophe

Climate change is already clearly noticeable. With this action, XR wants to show how short the time we have left to prevent a climate catastrophe, says spokesperson Veerle van Dieren. “Governments and large companies are doing too little to mitigate the climate crisis.”

XR Utrecht takes action in various ways: dialogue in the council chamber, chalk drawings or nonviolent civil disobedience. What is special about today’s action is that students and alumni of the conservatory are also taking part.
