Mourning at Union – hurricane destroys forest house fir

My friend the tree is dead!

Union employees and fans now have to get used to this dreary sight. The beautiful and more than 20 meter high fir tree in front of the forester’s house, which gave the stadium An der Alten Försterei its name, is history.

On Thursday around 10.30 a.m. she fell victim to hurricane Ylenia.

Union spokesman Christian Arbeit (47): “The most beautiful Christmas tree in this city is no longer there. Nothing happened to anyone. But the tree is actually gone. We’re all a little sad about that.”

Fortunately, the forester’s lodge, where President Dirk Zingler (57) has his office, remained undamaged.

The tree was weakened by disease. The employees discovered this when, for safety reasons, they dismantled it with a heavy heart on Thursday.

It is unclear how old the proud fir tree was. BZ counted the annual rings on the stump: it must have been at least 35 to 40 years.
