The game was developed by the Swede Markus Persson and released in 2011. He founded the company Mojang Studios to develop Minecraft, which was acquired by Microsoft for 2.5 billion dollars in 2014.
Other popular computer games lag far behind Minecraft’s sales figures. For example, Grand Theft Auto V has sold more than 180 million copies since it was released ten years ago.
