Motorists who refuse a breathalyzer must hand in their car keys | statement of the day

A motorist drove into a house in Tynaarlo. He drove without a driver’s license. He had to hand that in after he refused to cooperate with a breathalyzer test. Is it better to also confiscate the car keys in such a case?

Police suspected he had been drinking. That could not be confirmed because he refused to cooperate with a breathalyzer test. The police then confiscated his driver’s license and had his car towed to the carpool area. A little later they released him. He promptly retrieved his car and then drove into a house.

“Why didn’t they take his keys or lock up his car at the police station? Or put him in jail until he was sober? I don’t understand,” says Arjan Veendijk, whose house the driver drove into on Saturday.

Is that a good idea? Do motorists who do not want to participate in a breathalyzer also have to hand in their car keys at the police station as standard? Comment below on the statement of the day.
