MotoGP changes the format: from Silverstone only Free Practice 2 valid for Q2

From Silverstone, the first session on Friday will be free: for access to Q2, only the times of FP2, now called ‘Practice’, will count. In this way, the riders will have a shift to work only on the bikes and set-ups, without looking for performance

The format of the MotoGP weekend has changed: from the Silverstone GP on the weekend of August 6, the first practice session on Friday (45′ FP1) will be free and not functional to the standings for access to Q1 and Q2. In order to enter the noble phase of the qualification, only the Free Practice2, now called ‘Practice’, of 60′ will now count. In this way, the ‘old’ combined classification of FP1 and FP2 will no longer count for access to Q1 and Q2, but only that of Friday afternoon. The Saturday session, of 30′, will now be called FP2 and will be free.

motorcycle preparation

The change meets the requests of many drivers, worried for safety reasons and forced to use FP1 and FP2 as a mini-session of qualifying, with related dangers and greater risk of accidents. The riders will thus have a shift to dedicate only to preparing the bike and searching for set-up, without worrying about finding time.

unanimity

The decision was taken by the GP Commission, made up of Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, President), Paul Duparc (FIM), Hervé Poncharal (IRTA) and Biense Bierma (MSMA), assisted by Jorge Viegas (FIM President), Carlos Ezpeleta (Dorna ), Mike Trimby (IRTA, Meeting Secretary) and Corrado Cecchinelli (Director of Technology), with immediate effect and unanimous agreement among the MotoGP class teams.
