44 World Championships disputed in the premier class, 33 Drivers’ titles, 34 Constructors and over 500 GPs won. Numbers that are enough to describe excellence but that are not enough, alone, to tell the study and work behind each of the technological innovations brought to the track in recent years. These are the figures of Brembo, the leading Italian company in the braking systems sector, on the eve of the 2022 MotoGP championship, starting this weekend from Losail, Qatar, for the first of 21 stages of the richest world championship calendar in history. A very long season full of technical innovations, which will see the company based in Stezzano, in the province of Bergamo, once again the absolute protagonist, confirming the supply to all 12 teams involved in the category.

DETACHED FOR ALL TASTES

The range of components supplied by Brembo ranges from calipers, discs, pads, brake and clutch pumps. As also happened in previous years, the possibility for each of the 24 drivers on the grid to choose the components that best suit their driving style is fundamental, installing different materials from time to time, also depending on the track and race tactics. For this reason, six disc geometries are made available with two material specifications (High Mass, high-end, and Standard low-end), for a total of twelve different solutions available.

MOTOGP, NEW 355MM DISC

And even if most of the riders will focus on 340 mm discs, the big news of the season is represented by the ventilated carbon disc with a diameter of 355 mm, specially designed to improve heat exchange and maintain a high level of performance in the event of very high temperatures. Already proven in the pre-season tests in Mandalika, this is a solution that could make the difference on the most severe tracks on braking systems, such as Spielberg, Motegi, Sepang and Buriram.

THE QUEEN OF DANCE, THE GP4 GRIPPER

The queen will still be the GP4, the new four-piston radial-mount caliper introduced in the 2020 World Championship and widely appreciated by two-wheel champions despite the fact that someone, for reasons of habit, continued to use the 2019 specification. – which winks at aerodynamics with the presence of fins on the caliper body – the GP4 stands out for its innovative system capable of amplifying the braking torque with the same force on the brake lever and for the anti-drag , a spring device that avoids accidental contact between pads and disc. This eventuality is decidedly unpleasant when you are fighting on the edge of thousandths.

MATTER OF FEELING

But an implant is made not only of discs and calipers. Indeed, not to be underestimated is the question of the feeling of braking, which can really be worth precious seconds during a race. For this reason, the remote adjuster, a control operated by the rider with the left hand to adjust the position of the brake lever even in motion. Finally, a third of the MotoGP riders have now converted to the thumb master cylinder, the technical solution created by Brembo in the 1990s for Mick Doohan and which allows the rear brake to be activated with a lever operated by the left thumb. The pump then made its debut in 2019 push & pulla 2.0 thumb pump that the rider can also operate with the index finger for greater modulation.

brembo, NOT ONLY BRAKES

The range of products of the group for 2022 is also completed by the Marchesini forged magnesium rims, chosen by 8 out of 12 teams, which allow you to save a little on the scale, favoring the handling of the bike when changing direction. In short, an all-round commitment for the companies of the Brembo family, also involved in the minor categories of the World Championship not only with the supply of Marchesini calipers, steel discs, pads, pumps and rims, but also with Sbs Friction products and J.Juan: the two brands, recently acquired by the Bergamo group, participate personally in the Moto2 and Moto3 seasons, supplying respectively brake pads and friction material, and metal braided brake hoses
