Mother of two children died after crashing into truck on E40

The accident occurred around 2:20 am on the E40 near Snellegem, a sub-municipality of Jabbeke. A truck was parked at an airport in the direction of the coast. A 42-year-old Frenchman probably fell asleep for a moment, causing his vehicle to deviate from the roadway and collide with the truck.

The driver sustained minor injuries in the accident, but help came too late for his partner. The 39-year-old woman, who was sitting in the front of the vehicle, died on the spot from the consequences of the impact. The daughters of the family sat in the backseat. A 12-year-old girl was taken to hospital with serious injuries, while her 6-year-old sister suffered minor injuries. The Bruges department of the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office decided not to appoint a traffic expert.
