There is little left of the wooden house in Lage Zwaluwe where fire raged on Friday. The roof collapsed, the windows burst and everything inside burned. The 35-year-old resident and her ten-year-old son managed to escape in time, but are now in sackcloth and ashes. “She is having a hard time psychologically,” says Bettina Kavelaars, the woman’s best friend.
Bettina received a call on Friday evening that her friend’s house, whom she prefers not to name, was on fire. Shortly before, the woman had gone shopping with her son. “Some crisps, sweets and a glass of wine for the evening,” says Bettina. When they came home ten minutes later, it turned out that there had been a break-in.
“She was only able to save her bunny, dog, two cats.”
Inside were three men, one of whom was an acquaintance who had visited the woman earlier that evening. The moment the men fled, her son discovered that flames were coming from the roof. “She wanted to try to put it out, but that was no use,” says Bettina. “She was only able to save her rabbit, dog, two cats from the kitchen and then they left.”
The house on Koning Gustaf Adolfstraat burned to the ground. Facing that is difficult for mother and son. According to Bettina, they are very affected. “They dread going to the house and have been afraid of fire since the fire. Even a candle makes them anxious.”

The two are now temporarily living with the woman’s parents. They feel safe in that place, but the situation is not ideal. “They have the upper floor, but living with your parents at that age is not nice. She has not only lost her house and her belongings, but also all her freedom.”
To support her friend, Bettina is one fundraiser started. The goal is to raise 10,000 euros. “People may say that she is insured for that, but you never get everything back,” says Bettina. “Her son now wears an old tracksuit from his father and she herself only has extra underpants. they decide for themselves what they really need.”
