Mother and daughter fight in the mud for first place in prutrace

Mirriam Guljé has been the fastest woman in the prutrace in Broek in Waterland for years. But now she really has to get to work because the new generation wants to knock her off the throne. That competition comes from none other than her very own daughter. “I hope I can beat mom,” says 16-year-old Sabijn.

The two last competed three years ago. “Then there was thirty seconds between,” says mother Mirriam Guljé. She hopes she can still handle her daughter. “I hope not,” says Sabijn.

The prutrace, also known as ‘land over sand’, is the final piece of the festival week in the village. During the festive week, different teams compete against each other. The prutrace is perhaps the dirtiest part that the Broekers perform.

‘I want to win’

“If I tell friends from Amsterdam that I’m going to run through ditches, they would think I’m crazy,” thinks Sabijn. Yet she does not want to invite those friends to experience it because, “I would have to walk with them and I want to win”.

Unfortunately for her, she again fails to beat her mother. Mirriam crosses the finish line with a large lead. She is first again and her daughter finishes second after the tough race due to the heat. “I’m super proud of mom, she’s still the queen of locks.”
