Mother and daughter face a great adventure: to South Korea with scouting

Daniëlle and Anouk Boonstra are facing a high point in their existence as scouts. The Krommenians – mother and daughter – have been members of the scouting in Beverwijk since their early years. In August, they will attend the World Scout Jamboree, a mega event in South Korea, which attracts approximately 55,000 scouts from all over the world.

The event is intended to introduce scouts to other cultures. That is why mother Daniëlle will soon be standing in a large tent to show Dutch culture. “For example, we will taste cheese or play an old Dutch game.”

The preparations have already started: a meeting is planned next month where Anouk is updated about the event and gets to know the scouts of her troop. “I belong to the Apollo butterflies in a group of thirty,” says Anouk. “We get to know each other in advance, so you don’t have to go there all by yourself. And then we also do some preparatory things, such as getting to know food from South Korea.”

Trade with other scouts

Of the 55,000 scouts, 2,000 come from the Netherlands. England is purveyor with 3,000 scouts. Daniëlle: “We must have bought some ‘swap items’ to exchange with scouts from other countries, for example badges or ties.”

They are both very excited about it now. “I’m only going to experience this once,” laughs Anouk. “I’m 15 now and you can only go there if you’re between 14 and 17 years old. I think it’s very cool to join as a participant now.”
