78 internationals
After the end of his contract with Charlotte FC, Christian Fuchs retired at the age of 36. The full-back made 26 appearances in the MLS for the newcomer last season.
The long-standing ÖFB captain, who had never undergone normal football training, started with the Lower Austrian state league club Wiener Neustadt. Mattersburg, who were promoted to the Bundesliga in Burgenland, got him from there in 2003, where Fuchs took his first steps as a professional. Fuchs was part of the legendary team from Burgenland, which has since disbanded and which, among other things, reached the cup final twice and finished third in the Bundesliga in 2006/07.
In May 2006, at the age of 20, the then Mattersburger made his debut in the ÖFB national team and also took part in the 2008 home European Championship. After the tournament, his first foreign engagement followed with Bundesliga club VfL Bochum, with whom he was relegated from the Bundesliga in 2010. He then played in Mainz in 2010/11 and at Schalke from 2011 to 2015. With the “Knappen” he qualified three times in a row for the round of 16 of the Champions League.
For the 2015/16 season, Fuchs moved to England to Leicester City, where he was to celebrate the greatest success of his career: he became English champion with Leicester in 2016. He then led the Austrian national team as captain to the 2016 European Championships, but ended his career after the preliminary round after 78 international matches in the ÖFB-Elf. At the end of his time in Leicester, Fuchs won the FA Cup with the club in 2021.

Then, in the summer of 2021, he fulfilled his long-standing dream and moved to the USA, his wife’s home country. He joined Charlotte FC and initially played second-rate for Charlotte Independence before the team joined the MLS in 2022. Now the defender’s career ends after more than 600 professional games.
19 years. A real leader.
