Edin Terzic has been criticized at Borussia Dortmund for a long time. The gap to league leaders Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Xabi Alonso is 20 points. In one statistic, however, the 41-year-old is ahead of the Spaniard. The BVB coach substituted a player who then scored a goal nine times this season – the best in the Bundesliga.

Alonso’s bench players managed seven goals – the third-best value together with Sebastian Hoeneß from VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen’s Ole Werner. However, the Werkself coach is listed ahead of his two colleagues in the statistics because he only used 93 of 115 substitution opportunities in the 23 games, while Hoeneß and Werner each used 104.

Terzic resorted 101 times to the players he had previously left out. Including assists, his bench players even contributed 18 goals, also the best value in the league. Hoeneß and Bayern’s Thomas Tuchel follow in this statistic with 16 goals, but “only” six substitutes were directly successful for the Bayern coach.

The worst value – excluding coaches who were hired or fired during the season – was achieved by Darmstadt’s Torsten Lieberknecht, who was only able to celebrate a goal from his substitute once. Things look even worse at 1. FC Köln: Neither Steffen Baumgart nor his successor Timo Schultz even managed a joker goal.
